Installing Duo Mobile on a Mobile Phone

Make sure that you are off of the campus network when setting up 2FA for the first time or the BYUI network will automatically log you in.


Setting up on Android

1. Download the Duo Mobile app.

2. Sign in to your BYU-Idaho account.

3. Tap Settings, then Add a new device.

4. Tap Call Me.

5. You'll receive a phone call from Duo Security. Answer the phone and follow the over-the-phone instructions.

6. After you hang up the phone, you'll be asked what type of device you wish to use to authenticate. Choose Mobile Phone from the list provided. Tap Continue.

7. You'll then be taken to a screen where you'll need to enter and confirm a phone number for your account. Enter the same phone number that you entered in Workday into the box provided, then tap the box next to the line You entered (your number). This number already exists and will be replaced. Tap Continue.

8. The next screen will prompt you to install the Duo Mobile app if you have not done so already. Tap I have Duo Mobile.

9. Tap Continue to go to the Duo app.

10. You'll be taken to the Duo Mobile app, where you'll find a passcode. This means that you have successfully linked Duo Mobile with your account. Close out of the app and return to your browser.

11. Tap Continue.

12. You will be taken to the My Settings & Devices page. You may need to scroll down to find and use the When I log in: drop-down menu to choose which authentication method you’d like to use automatically. Tap Back to Login.

13. You'll be taken to the main authentication screen. Tap the box next to Remember me for 30 days, then tap Send me a push and respond to the notification.

You have now set up a new mobile device on your Dup Mobile account. This is the device that will receive push notifications whenever your account is accessed.


Setting up on iPhone

1. Download the Duo Mobile app. 

2. Sign in to your BYU-Idaho account. 

If you have content restrictions enabled, they will prevent you from being able to login with your device. Follow the steps in the Disabling Content Restrictions section to fix this issue.

3. Tap Settings, then Add a new device

5. You'll receive a phone call from Duo Security. Answer the phone and follow the over-the-phone instructions.

6. After you hang up the phone, you'll be asked what type of device you wish to use to authenticate. Choose Mobile Phone from the list provided. Tap Continue.

10. Confirm that you'd like to leave your browser for Duo Mobile by tapping Open.

11. You'll be taken to the Duo Mobile app, where you'll find a passcode. This means that you have successfully linked Duo Mobile with your account. Close out of the app and return to your browser.

13. You will be taken to the My Settings & Devices page. You may need to scroll down to find and use the When I log in: drop-down menu to choose which authentication method you’d like to use automatically. Tap Back to Login.

14. You'll be taken to the main authentication screen. Tap the box next to Remember me for 30 days, then tap Send me a push and respond to the notification.

You have now set up a new mobile device on your Dup Mobile account. This is the device that will receive push notifications whenever your account is accessed.


Disabling Content Restrictions

iOS 12 or newer

1. Navigate to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content

2. Uncheck Limit Adult Websites to completely disable content restrictions.

- If you do not want to fully disable content restrictions, you can allow duosecurity.com within the Content Restrictions page on the iOS device. This will allow the Duo Prompt to display even if content restrictions are enabled.

iOS 11 or older

1. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions > Websites

2. Uncheck Limit Adult Content to completely disable content restrictions.

macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or higher

1. Open System Preferences

2. Navigate to Screen Time > Preferences > Content & Privacy

3. Set any Web Content restrictions to Unrestricted access

- If you do not want to fully disable content restrictions, you can allow duosecurity.com within the Content Restrictions page on the iOS device or to the Allowed Websites Only list on macOS. This will allow the Duo Prompt to display even if content restrictions are enabled.


Using Duo Mobile with iPhone Touch ID or Face ID

Touch ID

Duo Mobile 3.7 and later also supports Touch ID for iOS. If you have Touch ID configured in your device, you will see a Touch ID prompt every time you authenticate via Duo Mobile. This method serves as an extra layer of security to your account.

If you are unable to scan your fingerprint using Touch ID, you can also verify your identity by using your device's passcode (the same one you use for your lock screen).

Face ID

Duo Mobile 3.19 and later supports Face ID for iPhone X and later. If you have Face ID configured in your device, you will see a Face ID prompt every time you authenticate via Duo Mobile. This method serves as an extra layer of security to your account.

If you are unable to scan your face for Face ID, you can also verify your identity by using your device's passcode (the same one you use for your lock screen).
