Turnitin Framework

Set Up

To setup the Turnitin framework, first click on the "Assignments" tab on the left of the screen in Canvas.

Click on the "+ Assignment" button on the top right side of the Assignments page.

Give the assignment a name, a description, the number of points the assignment is worth, and how you wish the grade to be displayed. Under submission type, select "Online".

Under "Plagiarism Review" select "Turnitin". You can then choose what you will use to compare the papers against and if there is anything in the Similarity Report that you wish to exclude. You also have the option to allow the student to see the results of Turnitin or you can make it so that the student does not see the results by choosing "Never".

Here are some other options that you can choose to include if you wish. When you are finished creating the assignment click "Save & Publish".

If you wish to add a rubric to the assignment, you can add one by clicking on the "+ Rubric" button.

Once the assignment has been created, you can move the assignment to the desired module. To do this, click on "Modules".

In the module where you want to add the assignment, click on the "+" button.

Make sure "Assignment" is the option chosen to add. Select the assignment from the list of assignments then click "Add Item".

The assignment is now in the module.

Viewing Turnitin Results

To view the results of an assignment that has been checked by the Turnitin tool, first go the the module where the assignment is located and click on the assignment.

Click on "SpeedGrader" in the top right of the page. This will show the papers of the students that have submitted this assignment.

Under "Submitted Files" on the right side of the page, you can view the percentage of the paper that has been plagiarized. Here you can also give the paper a grade and add comments.

You can switch between student papers by using the arrows at the top.

This is what a plagiarized paper will look like.

Click on the percentage to view the part of the paper that has been plagiarized and where else the paper has been submitted.

Click on the all sources button in the right side of the page.

You can view where the paper was submitted by clicking on the submissions. The red highlighted portion of the student paper is what has been plagiarized from the original paper.

Copying a Turnitin Assignment to Another Course

From the Dashboard in Canvas, click on the course you are wanting to add a Turnitin assignment from another course to.

Click on "Settings" on the left of the page at the bottom.

On the right side of the page click on "Import Course Content".

In the "Content Type" box choose "Copy a Canvas Course". Search for the course that contains the assignment you are wanting to add to the current course. In "Content" select "Select specific content". When finished, click "Import".

Under "Current Jobs", click on the "Select Content" button".

Navigate to where the assignment is and check the box next to the assignment name. You can select multiple assignments that you wish to copy. Once you have selected all of the assignments that you wish to copy, click on "Select Content".

Wait for the content to finish copying. When it is finished it will say "Completed".

Move the assignments from "Imported Assignments" to "Assignments" in the Assignments tab by dragging them. You can then move the assignments to the desired module by following the instructions as explained above.

Turnitin External Tool

Set Up

To setup the Turnitin external tool, first click on the "Assignments" tab on the left of the screen in Canvas.

Click on the "+ Assignment" button on the top right side of the Assignments page.

Give the assignment a name, a description, the number of points the assignment is worth, assign it to the correct assignment group, then choose how you wish the grade to be displayed.

Under Submission Type, select "External Tool" then click the "Find" button.

Scroll down and click on "Turnitin External Tool" then click the "Select" button.

Click "Save" at the bottom of the page. You may publish the assignment as well if you wish. You have now created a submission box for the students to submit their assignment.

Grading Turnitin Assignments

To grade the student's papers, first click on "Assignments".

Click on the pencil icon under the "Grade" section.

You can add the student's score by clicking on the box at the top of the page and adding a number that reflects the student's effort out of the total points the assignment is worth.

You can view the plagiarism results as well by clicking on the match overview button.

When you are done grading and viewing the plagiarism results, click on the "X" at the top right of the page. The score is automatically added to Canvas and the student can now see the results.
