BYU-Idaho provides proctoring services for some key assessments in online courses. To ensure the wise use of campus resources, course councils should discuss the rationale for proctoring within their course, review the guidelines for proctoring, and complete this workflow to request those proctoring services. This process ensures a targeted and methodical approach for the growth of online proctoring services.

Definitions

  • Key Assessments: Key assessments are the higher stakes summative assessments. They are defined by the department and are mapped to the course outcomes.
  • Summative Assessments: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit.  Summative assessments are often high-stakes, which means they have a higher point value.
  • Formative Assessments: Formative assessments monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback for students to improve their learning.  Formative assessments are often low-stake, which means they have a lower or no-point value.

Would you like to request proctoring services for an online course?

Curriculum Designers should use this workflow to request proctoring services on assessments in online courses. If necessary, the Online Learning Council (OLC) will be notified of the request for approval.

How many exams need proctoring services in your course?

Guidelines
  • Course councils should be judicious in determining whether proctoring is an effective part of their course’s online assessment strategy.
  • Course leads should articulate the rationale for requesting proctoring in their specific online course.
    • Examples for why proctoring might be required or preferred in a course include: verifying student learning, ensuring the security of exam content, ensuring course integrity, and meeting certification requirements.
  • Online proctoring is only available for key assessments.
  • No more than five proctored assessments are allowed per course.
  • Non-proctored formative assessments should be offered before high stakes proctored summative assessments.

Does your course meet the guidelines as outlined above for proctoring services?

Please do not include any practice exams for proctoring.

Congratulations! Your request for proctoring services is approved. Please complete the following form to document where you will use this service. Also, please use the standardized instructions for both instructors and students below.

About Proctorio

Instead of finding a proctor to administer the exams in this course, we will be using an online proctoring software called Proctorio. It allows students to take the test anywhere without a human proctor present. Students will need the following:

  • Webcam
  • Microphone
  • Google Chrome Web Browser
  • Proctorio Chrome Extension

After students install the Proctorio plug-in, they will access their proctored exams like they would for any other exam. Their exams will be recorded and reviewed by the Testing Center. Any questionable exams will be forwarded on to you, and you can review the recordings right within Canvas. You can review all exams from the moment they are completed, but this is not required.

Here are some helpful links to resources with more information:

  1. Proctorio Held Center - The Proctorio extension must be installed for this to open.
  2. Campus Faculty - This resource provides information on how to use Proctorio in your remote course.
  3. Online Instructors - This resource provides information on how to use Proctorio in your online course.
